My Project
In order to play an instrument properly, you need more than just the instrument itself. Most instruments require additional equipment to help hold it correctly and play with good tone. Many of my orchestra students use school-provided instruments, and not all of them are able to purchase this extra equipment. Accessories like shoulder rests and rosin are essential for playing the violin, especially for more advanced playing techniques. My students are motivated, quick learners. They want to learn things like shifting, vibrato, and different bow techniques, but it's much more difficult for them to learn correctly if they don't have all the things they need to play.
Being able to provide quality shoulder rests and rosin to any student who uses a school instrument would ensure equity in my classroom and give every student the best opportunity to develop their skills.
These items would help prevent students from developing bad playing habits, improve their posture, and create a much more unified look and sound for the group overall.
Additionally, a few of my school instruments are currently housed in cases with broken zippers, handles, and latches. This makes it difficult for students to transport the instruments to and from school. Being able to replace the cases would keep the instrument safe, be more convenient, and hopefully encourage students to take their instruments home to practice more!
