My Students
Fiber is a part of our world. Around the world, natural fibers define a community and are an important part of local traditions. Help my students to have the opportunity to learn about these fibers as they travel virtually around the world learning about cotton, alpaca, wool, silk, and linen.
My students are first generation immigrants who are learning about the different cultures of the world through our social studies curriculum.
We are skyping with different communities around the world as well as learning about different fibers and weaving traditions that are part of what define important cultural traditions. As we travel virtually to Asia, we will learn about the importance of silk and the silkworm. This project will give us the opportunity to learn first hand about the life cycle and value of silk.
My Project
Currently my students and I are traveling virtually in North America where we have been learning about cotton and wool as well as the Navajo weaving tradition. Next we will be departing for South America where we will focus on backstrap weaving and the importance of alpaca and llamas to the cultures of the Andes. From there we will travel to Australia to learn about wool. In Asia, we will learn about silk and the silkworm. The silkworm farm will help my students raise silkworms and learn about the life cycle. The looms and silk painting kits will be used for students to learn first hand about both weaving and painting silk. The looms will continue to be used as we travel to other continents too.
Next we will travel to Africa where we will learn about Kente cloth, rug weaving, and cotton. In Europe, students will learn about tapestry and rug weaving as well as the use of linen and wool. We will skype with a famous English rugweaver and interview him about weaving.
Fibers are an important part of culture and our world.
This project will give my students the opportunity to learn about different fibers as well as create lasting pieces of art and real world connections. Instead of just reading about different cultures and fibers, students will be learning by doing. They will raise silkworms and learn about how silk is harvested, dyed, spun, and woven. The looms will be used for further exploration with other fibers and weaving as we travel virtually.
