This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The Fiber Arts Club is a place where students can explore traditional handcrafts such as crochet, knitting, cross stitch, embroidery, etc.
These crafts are incredible tools to teach my students mindfulness, financial literacy & entrepreneurship skills, and perseverance when learning a new skill does not come naturally.
My students enjoy creating stuffed animals, dolls, hats, key chains, clothing, and friendship bracelets. Having a large variety of yarn and embroidery floss available allows students to customize their projects to reflect their individual personalities. This year we hope to produce a variety of household items (dishtowels, coasters, washcloths, etc) to sell at one of our school events. This will provide the opportunity to learn how to price handmade items to make a profit, by calculating production cost, time invested in creating the pieces, taxes, and the "booth rental" costs.
As important as the practical financial skills are, the most significant skills I see my kids learn during club are the mindfulness skill. Fiber arts forces you to slow down and provides the opportunity to quiet your mind and reflect on the day. Our students are surrounded by noise and opinions from the moment they wake up in the morning until their head hits the pillow at night. Club gives them the chance to learn a practical skill that gives their brain a break from the voices around them while simultaneously allowing them to check in with their own thoughts and emotions.
