This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching the third grade for the past five years at a great school in East Harlem. Our school community’s enrollment is about 400 students of which 90% of the students qualify for free lunch. Presently my class size is 25 students, which allows for many opportunities for small group projects and activities. This class size also allows me to provide more individualized instruction to support the needs of my students.
Every month, my students bring a writing piece through the writing process. They work hard all throughout the month to revise and edit a piece of writing to publish. At the third grade level, this task is a challenge. They work hard on not only creating a interesting story, but also editing their grammar and spelling. They work on developing the writer's craft by adding dialogue, figurative and descriptive language, and voice to their pieces. After this long process all they have to publish and present their stories on is plain loose leaf paper.
My students need supplies to make their published pieces beautiful, and really feel like published writers. They work so hard all month, and never feel the accomplishment of a published writer. I have my students present their pieces at a publishing party, where parents and other students attend. They read their pieces and we have a gallery tour. I would love to be able to send them around the school with a finished book that they wrote to read to other classes with their own illustrations! To do this they need pencils, crayons, construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, and colored pencils.
Please help my writers become truly published! These supplies would motivate them to do their best at developing their craft. They can travel around the school and read books that they wrote to their fellow school mates. Also, the publishing process is a key phase of the writing process. A lack of supplies and money is hindering my students from understanding what all their hard work truly means. The pride of presenting your hard work in a beautiful and well illustrated package would make all the difference to my struggling writers. These books would then be placed in a writing portfolio that follows them throughout the grades. Please help my published writers feel like real authors!
