Feeling Connections Through Sensory Play

My Students

My students within our school are an incredibly curious, independent, and diverse bunch of 3-5 year olds who love to learn. 75% of our students at UICSKC are eligible for free and reduced lunch, and 75% qualify for Head Start, Early Head Start, or state childcare subsidies. 87% of our families are single-parent households. We partner with our student and families to provide a high quality early childhood education and resources to set them up for success.

My students come to school with inquiring minds that are ready to investigate and explore with materials in and out of the classroom.

They like to explore the environment on their own as much as possible and ask questions that lead to new explorations and experiments.

My Project

This project will increase their manipulative skills and resources for social-emotional development by giving them new objects and textures to process. This pandemic has been chaotic for everyone, but starting a new school and routine in the middle of a pandemic? That’s incredible.

Some of my students have never been in a structured environment; it can be overwhelming and stressful.

In these sensory environments, they are in control, and they are ready to learn. My students look forward to sensory play in the morning, and for many, they need it to feel in control of the world around them. It gives them time to unwind and get into the grove of coming to class. Sensory experiences help them cope with their big feelings and, in turn, give us a new opportunity to communicate with them.
