Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students come for low socio-economic homes and have a disability such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and emotional disabilities. My students experience difficulties with reading and reacting to social cues, as well as difficulties with self regulation. Despite the difficulties my students encounter when trying to connect to their peers, my students continue to make the effort. It is heart wrenching to see them attempt to make connections only to be rejected and or misperceived. They grow frustrated and continue to look for more ways to connect. My goal is to prepare my students to be adults who can connect with the world around them in a meaningful way.
"I like how I told myself to calm down!" This was how a student managed his frustration during a school event.
Hearing him echo what I had been teaching all year and realizing how amazingly he had handled the situation is inspiring for a school psychologist like me. I would like my students to experience more positive connections to their feelings and peers but it is limited due to the outdated materials we have access to.
My Project
The emotes and character building books and board games will keep my students engaged in the lessons and learn necessary social and self-regulation skills. They will want to return to learn more skills. The workbooks will allow them to learn skills that they can then use in the classroom or on the playground.
My students are eager to learn skills necessary to connect to those around them.
They are avid learners and are so interested in connecting with their peers.My students will be so appreciative of any support you can provide them to make meaningful relationships with those around them.
