This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning mathematical concepts, such as one-to-one correspondence and multiplication, can be really hard to understand for students who struggle. Strictly using pencil and paper to learn these concepts is boring and difficult. Manipulating objects can make learning much more fun and easy, too!

Our school is very inclusive and supportive of students who have special educational needs.

The students do not discriminate whether playing on the yard or helping others in the classroom. This inclusive environment is just what the students in my classroom need to help them succeed. The students in my classroom have autism and/or other low incidence disorders and they need a lot more support to learn and grow. My students are eager to learn and have made huge gains, though they require more hands-on learning experiences than the general education curriculum can give them.

My Project

The materials you are supporting our classroom to receive will help my students to attack math problems in a hands-on way. The manipulatives will help them to "feel their way" along the path to solving fraction, multiplication, and division problems. These materials will also help to support the underlying concepts they will encounter in math problem solving, rather than simply memorizing an algorithm or set of steps.

My students enjoy working with their hands, rather than completing book work or worksheets.

Don't most students? They relish the opportunities to represent the math in objects, rather than numbers. These materials will give them many opportunities to experience math problem solving using the tools they enjoy, as well as that help them succeed.
