Feel the Passion of Flamenco: Music, Culture and Connection

Help me give my students the chance to feel the heartbeat of flamenco, to connect with a different culture music, and to discover that no matter where we come from, we can all dance to the same rhythm.

My Project

As a Spanish teacher from Andalusia, Spain — the birthplace of flamenco — I want to bring the soul of my culture into the classroom. At Ellen Ochoa Middle School, my students are curious, diverse, and full of potential. Many of them have never been exposed to music and traditions from other parts of the world. I believe that flamenco is more than just music — it’s a powerful tool for connection, expression, and cultural understanding.

To make this project possible, I’m requesting a tablet and a class set of headphones.

With the tablet, I can project videos of flamenco performances, use interactive music apps, and even create opportunities for students to record and reflect on their learning. The headphones will allow students to fully immerse themselves in the sounds of flamenco — the guitar, the singing, the clapping, and the rhythm of the dance — without distractions. This is especially important for students who need focused, sensory-rich experiences to stay engaged.

Flamenco is not only part of Spain’s cultural heritage, but also recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Through this project, students will explore its history, learn basic rhythms, discover famous artists, and even create their own performances inspired by it.
