This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the great privilege of teaching P.E. at my K-8th school as well as helping with many other extracurricular sports teams. We started our school sports program with just basketball and soccer but we have since expanded that to include volleyball, track & field, kickball, and flag football. We also have ambitions to offer tennis, baseball, and wrestling in the near future. We are thrilled at the prospect of offering new experiences to our students. We have high hopes that these teams will give students more positive extracurricular activities and teach them about sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork.
I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and all students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive at school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Our Kindergarten students even know the year of their college graduation!
My Project
Despite the fact that my school has a growing sports program that has had championship-caliber success, my school's first priority is education. When it was built, the focus was on classrooms and computer labs, not on space for extracurricular athletics. We've had to be creative with our school's sports teams and the location of their practices. One thing we have never had is facilities or space to have a weightlifting area for our sports teams. We'd like to enhance our middle school sports programs by introducing fundamental weightlifting to our student-athletes. We'd be required to use the outdoor space on the field and blacktop in order to have adequate space for this activity.
These canopy tents will provide the student-athletes with an area to exercise and work out that also serves as a protection from the hot Nevada sun.
If my student-athletes had these tents, they would be able to improve over the summer at team practices and be more prepared for the Fall sports season. These tents will allow for more student-athletes to have the opportunity to improve. This is something we have never been able to offer these student-athletes and we are hopeful to make it a part of our growing sports program for the coming year.
