Help me give my students a supportive classroom where they can learn to manage big emotions and build lifelong coping skills.

My Project

I teach an incredible group of students with emotional disabilities who are full of resilience, creativity, and potential. Every day, they show up carrying big emotions, and my mission is to create a space where those emotions aren’t punished but understood, supported, and transformed into powerful learning moments.

My students thrive with structure, calm, and choices.

They are working hard to learn how to identify what they feel, express those feelings safely, and use tools to regulate their bodies and minds. Many of them experience challenges with impulse control, anxiety, trauma, and sensory processing. That’s why we use the Zones of Regulation framework. We teach kids to understand their feelings using blue, green, yellow, and red “zones,” and empower them with strategies to get back to their learning brain.

The Little Spot book series will be a key part of this emotional learning. These engaging stories help students connect with characters who model identifying and managing feelings like anger, anxiety, and kindness to reinforce the same self-regulation language we use daily.

To support sensory regulation and reduce classroom distractions, I’m also requesting kick bands and headphones. Kick bands give students a safe outlet for their extra energy, allowing them to stay seated and focused while still moving. Headphones will help students who are overwhelmed by sound or need quiet during independent work or calming breaks.

A rolling storage cart will help me keep all these regulation tools, books, and materials organized and accessible so students can make independent, timely choices when they need support.

These resources will help students get out of their amygdala (where fear, stress, and survival responses live), and back into their prefrontal cortex (where thinking, problem-solving, and learning can happen). This isn’t just a classroom upgrade; it’s a lifeline for emotional growth and academic success.
