Feel at Home and Build a Road to Creative Thinking!
Help me give my students concrete, quality toys - including a wooden roadway set with vehicles, and a doll house with accessories - for creative play during their first school experience!
I teach at a public preschool on the south side of Chicago. From a play-based approach, to project-based learning - we focus on the idea of "nothing without joy." My preschoolers truly embody this vision as they learn and grow. They walk into the classroom bright-eyed and excited to play and learn. They are 3-5 year olds from varying social and economic backgrounds, who experience my classroom as their first school - often also understanding it as the only definition of school.
To maximize children’s learning potential, we follow an emergent curriculum that is based out of the interests and leads of children.
Teachers take inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach to education, and set up the classroom environment to allow children to create, build, and learn in their own unique ways. The children come together in the "blended classroom" model, where some of them have developmental delays and some of them are typically developing. They help each other every day, teaching me and everyone around them the biggest lesson in respect, love, and empathy.
My Project
My students, who are very young learners, respond greatly to quality concrete toys. They see home living and street life from the start of their life, and love re-enacting scenarios within these. This helps them not only problem-solve, but also develop hypotheses, further their thinking, and understand the relationships that exist within the world. Playing with miniature items, which they are able to manipulate with their own little hands, adds great value to their play as well.
I would love for my students to have miniature play items that they relate to and enjoy thoroughly.
A flexible road set will allow for hours of creative play everyday in our building area. Wooden road vehicles will complement this road set greatly, and allow children to keep building on their ideas everyday. A doll house in the dramatic play area will appeal to younger kids with more inclined interest in home life. Accessories for the doll house will keep them excited and challenge their thinking on a continued basis.
