Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Looking at my students, one would never know that they have seen war, death and experienced hunger and poverty, One would never know by looking at these angelic faces that they are refugees taken from a rural broken land and placed in the foreign and modern society of America.

I teach in an urban public school in which our student population mostly serves children from disadvantage and poverty stricken backgrounds.

Most of my students are refugees from Burma. They have escaped poverty and war and each student has a special and unique story. Some of my students have been separated from their parents and families and some have experienced the loss of a parent due to the war. Some of my students never had electricity or knew what it was until coming to the States and some of my students' homes were planted in trees...literally, they lived in tree houses.

My Project

The items that I have requested will go towards building math centers and my small group work for my students. After teaching a lesson, students will have opportunities to complete their work, explore math centers to continue to build math skills or work with me in a small group as I guide students' learning and help progress students forward to the next stage of learning. Because my students also have a language barrier, it is important that these math centers come with visuals and instructions. So, not only will my students be building math skills by working in these centers they will simultaneously build their language skills.

Donations made to this project will turn my water can into a water hose.

You see my classroom is a forest in the making. Each of my students began as little seeds of knowledge and they are sprouting up leaves by the time they get to third grade. It is up to me to water these seeds of knowledge that will one day grow into a vast forest. These centers will help my students master mathematical concepts and skills and also allow them opportunities to build upon their language and social skills.
