Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a teacher of 6th grade students engaged in a rigorous STEM curriculum and introductory financial literacy concepts, I believe providing snacks to reinforce positive behavior can make a significant difference in their learning.
This approach serves multiple purposes: it motivates students to maintain focus during challenging lessons, provides an energy boost to keep them alert and attentive, and creates positive associations with academic achievements.
Sharing snacks can foster a sense of community in the classroom, promoting collaboration and peer support. This strategy also ties in nicely with our financial literacy lessons, demonstrating the concepts of earning and budgeting in a practical, tangible way.
My goals in implementing this snack-based reward system are to increase student engagement in STEM activities, improve behavior and focus during difficult lessons, reinforce key financial literacy concepts through practical application, create a positive and supportive classroom environment, and ultimately boost overall academic performance in STEM subjects.
What makes my students special is their early exposure to advanced learning opportunities. They're engaging with complex STEM concepts at a young age, which prepares them for future academic and career success in these fields. Simultaneously, they're exploring introductory financial concepts, developing crucial life skills earlier than many of their peers. This combination of STEM and financial literacy creates a unique, well-rounded educational experience. Their ability to tackle complex STEM challenges at this age demonstrates their potential for high-level critical thinking, and exposure to these subjects encourages them to think about long-term academic and career goals.
