Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Food scarcity, especially for "nonessential" foods like snacks with protein and lower sugar content, is very real for my students. The school provides some snacks for after-school clubs but often they are not enough to nourish my students' brains and bodies after 6+ hours of focusing on school in another language (and translating their thinking and feelings all day). It's exhausting for them! There is an even more vital need for them to be healthfully nourished when faced with high-stakes state tests like the NYS English Regents exam and college courses that they are challenging themselves with.
Having an array of healthier snacks will not only help students choose more nutritious food options, but will help prevent them from having to spend critical family dollars that are most needed for basics like family meals, transportation and housing.
With food costs at an all time high in New York City, these healthy snacks will be truly appreciated by all of the students. I carefully chose snacks that have less sugar, flavors that I know the students will like, and an array for those with dietary restrictions due to culture or religion (ie. vegetarian, gelatin-free, no pork).
