Feeding Student Success

My students need food to help them get through the weekends and our upcoming Spring Break when breakfast and lunch will not be provided for them at school.

My Students

As a Title 1 school, we serve a diverse population of underprivileged students. Approximately 67% of our 700 students (470) receive free or reduced lunch. We have seven families (which impacts appx. 18 students at our school) who are classified as homeless – and that number does not include the 40-50 students who live with grandparents or other extended family members who struggle to care for them.

Free or reduced lunch provides school cafeteria meals to students, however, a significant number of our students (approximately 80) based on homelessness or being “doubled up” with other families, live in homes that are deemed “food insecure”.

For those students, most of their meals are eaten on campus (breakfast, snack and lunch). Without intervention from the school, when they leave campus, they won’t eat again until they return to school the next school day.

My Project

Students cannot learn if they are cold, tired, and hungry. Our food pantry on campus provides extra food to some of our struggling families to help them get through the weekend. Without the free food from our school, our students would have limited access to nutritious food until they return to school on Monday.

Our school pantry is supported by school food drives and donations from staff, but that is not enough to keep our pantry stocked: we have a higher need than supply.

Donations tend to be canned vegetables and starches. With the vast need in our community, we are unable to consistently keep the pantry stocked with proteins and nonperishable meats. The items that were chosen as part of this project will give our pantry the boost it needs to keep going strong for a couple more months.
