My Project

Using cooking ingredients in a moderate-severe special education classroom offers powerful, hands-on opportunities to support language development. Cooking activities naturally involve sequencing, following directions, vocabulary expansion, and opportunities for requesting, commenting, and labeling. Students learn new words like “stir,” “measure,” “pour,” or “melt” in a real-life context, helping reinforce comprehension and expressive use. Cooking also provides repeated opportunities for communication functions such as asking for help, making choices between ingredients, or describing how something tastes or smells. For students with limited verbal abilities, these tasks can be supported with visuals, AAC devices, or sign language, promoting accessible and meaningful language use.

Beyond language, working with cooking ingredients also builds functional independence.

These activities teach students skills they can use at home and in future adult living environments, such as measuring, mixing, using utensils safely, and cleaning up. Cooking fosters a sense of autonomy, pride, and contribution when students prepare something they can eat or share. It also naturally encourages teamwork, turn-taking, and task completion in a structured, engaging way. With consistent routines, visual supports, and individualized scaffolding, cooking becomes more than just a fun activity—it becomes a powerful tool for communication growth and real-world learning.
