Feeding Our Minds With Feed USA

My students need a Grow Lab Indoor Garden to cultivate learning experiences throughout the year as they plant, care for, harvest, and enjoy fruits and vegetables.

My Students

Fresh fruits and vegetables should be a staple of all young children's diets. Sadly, many students in our schools go without the important nutrients provided by these foods. My project will allow for the growth of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school year.

I teach fifth grade in a small, rural school.

My current classroom has a population of 27 students. Several of the students come from lower socioeconomic households and have limited experiences outside of the school setting. My proposal seeks to provide the opportunity for all my students to explore the wonders of planting, caring for, harvesting, and enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables. Every student should have experience growing their own food. Using the principles established by Feed USA, I seek to provide this experience for students, cultivating not only their understanding of how to grow their own food but also how these efforts are better for the environment.

My Project

Local and national news reports are full of stories about high obesity rates, increased numbers of diabetes and high cholesterol, and lack of exercise.....in our children! Amid the high-tech world of video games, wireless Internet access, and text messaging, our children have gotten away from the wonders of the natural world. My proposal would bring a Grow Lab Indoor Garden into the classroom. This would introduce students to the wonders found not in a computer or television screen, but rather in gardening and growing. Having an indoor garden will allow for growth of vegetables and fruits year round. Not only will students be able to see the growth in every stage, they will also be able to enjoy the harvest at the end.

As an educator, it is my responsibility to teach my students important life lessons, one of which is how to take care of themselves.

Having the ability to grow your own food is a crucial skill for all students to know and understand. This project will allow my students to practice this skill throughout the year, providing for hands-on learning experiences that will serve them throughout the rest of their lives.
