This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am working to make crackers, chips, granola bars and other grab and go food available as an incentive for students I work with. One of my teaching roles is working with a select group of low-income high school students who are credit deficient and need to quickly make up classes to be on track to graduate. These students have enrolled in a program where they take online classes on campus before the school day starts, and stay an hour after the school day ends.

These students are working hard, but some find it difficult to maintain the stamina needed and taper off toward the end of the semester and would benefit from healthy snacks like Nature's Garden Organic Trail Mix and Made Good granola bars .

Some students stop showing up, or stop doing work consistently. I am aiming to make it a place they want to be even when they are hitting a wall mentally and I would like to incentive their attendance. My plan is to attend these classes with them, pull students aside one y one to discuss their progress and help motivate them to keep working hard, and to provide a snack like a granola bar or some chips or a few pieces of candy. The kids at our school are highly motivated by food, usually because school is the only place they can count on food. The chips and granola bars and other snacks will also fuel their brains for the extra work they are doing as they are mentally and physically engaged in school work for upwards of 9 hours a day.
