My Project
Since moving here, I have changed the grade I have taught. Although the grade has changed, certain things haven't changed, such as my desire to help and support my students. Both schools I have taught in, have been Title I schools, located in high poverty areas. Because of that, funds can often be limited for resources. As a teacher, I enjoy helping my students in any way I can, which includes helping to provide supplies and food as needed.
This project is inspired by my students who come in late and miss breakfast.
When this happens, it might be hours before they have a chance to eat at lunch. As they anxiously wait for lunch, the student's attention isn't completely focused on the work and tasks given to them. My students asked for snacks, and we decided we should keep breakfast bars on hand for occasions such as this.
Likewise, when I started offering tutoring after school to a few students, they requested after-school snacks. I noticed that providing snacks for the students not only helped them stay on track for the tutoring session, but they were more likely to want to stay after school for tutoring and looked forward to it!
Whether students need to have a snack or drink for home or school, I want to continue to do what I can for them. Hunger should not be a concern for children. I also have plans to start a garden with the kids in the future. Teaching kids about healthy eating and gardening will be great lessons for school and life.. The students will be very appreciative of the snacks and drinks as we start this new year. My students' education is important, but so is their overall well-being.
