This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For many of our students, school meals are the only source of food they have. Nearly all students qualify for free lunch. Most of the food items served are not very healthy or nourishing.
Students only have 15 minutes to eat lunch and even less for breakfast if they are able to get to school on time.
Because of the change in district policy, our students have to stay at school until 2:50pm. That's nearly 3 hours from lunch until after school snack (if they get one). Several students complain of stomachaches throughout the week. I've noticed that it's usually after last recess.
I'd love to be able to provide them with a small, healthy snack to help tide them over until they get home (or possibly the next morning). I've searched the available possibilities and have chosen those that will last the longest and provide the most servings.
I supplement these snacks as often as possible with fruit from my trees and after-school programs.
