My Students
Kindergarten is such an important and pivotal year in a child's life. It is a year full of excitement and a lot of growth. It is a year filled with learning how to share, how to communicate, how to count and read.
My students are eager, energetic and very curious to learn about the world around them.
They love to jump, sing, play and dance. Their abilities and needs range from just learning the English Language to being beginning readers. However, no matter their abilities we are a family and they strive to do their best every day.
My Project
As their teacher, it is my goal that every one of my students leaves kindergarten loving to read. Teaching a child to read and to love reading go hand in hand. Students need to be exposed to high interest and engaging stories that make them want to continue to read. The books that I am requesting include Clifford, Pete the Cat, Biscuit, Olivia the Pig, Curious George, and cover a wide variety of interests and text level. Some are specifically meant for me to read to them and model what a good reader does. Other books are a part of a series that continue the story of the characters from the books that I read to them. This is how I plan to hook my students into loving reading!
Every year my students always wants to reread the books they hear me read to them because they fall in love with the story or the characters.
Now, my students can be introduced to a character through a read aloud and then find one of the beginning books to continue reading on their own.
This year in my classroom, we will have "Bookworm of the Week." The "bookworm" will be selected each week to be recognized as the reader of the week. As motivation, the "bookworm" will be able choose one of these series books and claim it. The book will then be dedicated into our classroom library with sticker on the inside of the book the child's name and a reason detailing why all students should read that specific book. My students will love to have a book that will always be in the library and other students will love reading new books because their friend has now given it the seal of approval. By the end of the year, every student will be selected as "Bookworm of the Week."
