Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at our high school in San Francisco are working towards graduating with a diploma and going onto a four-year university or technical/vocational field. Students take six-eight class periods a semester and are enrolled in city college courses, in addition to participating in internships, working on and off campus with community partners in activism and social justice projects, and developing social-emotional skills.

Our students take on rigorous coursework and are engaged in social justice, while living with trauma and experiencing other mental health and learning challenges.

Our students work hard, address real-life issues impacting society including deportation, gentrification, housing displacement, racism, sexism, and ableism, while trying to live the best lives they can. They work hard everyday to challenge stereotypes and often be the first in their family to attend college. We want to help them achieve their dreams.

My Project

Studies show that students who are not trying to learn on an empty stomach are better able to retain information. Students are better able to focus when they are not sitting hungry in a classroom. They are not all able to bring lunch from home, or have the time to prepare food to bring to school. Many students are unable to eat meals provided by the district due to food quality and diet restrictions.

Snacks help students focus and succeed in school.

By providing food for students, they are more likely to attend and stay in class instead of seeking out breaks and food elsewhere. Students are also not allowed to leave campus or order food for delivery, which limits their options.
