My Students
When I was a kid, phones had wires and the Internet was a novelty. Now just about every kid has the Internet in the palm of their hand. As technology gets faster, smaller, and cheaper, what will the ramifications be? That will largely be decided by today's youth, and is the topic of the book Feed.
My students are bright, young sophomores in our state's only majority Black high school.
These students strive for excellence, despite all the challenges that face the urban youth of today. They love to read, but only if the book is relevant to them. It is difficult to find money to purchase new and interesting book sets, which is why they need your help.
My Project
Imagine taking Holden Caulfield, putting an Internet connection in his head, and launching him to the moon. In this edgy dystopian novel, most people have "The Feed," which is an implant that gives them 24 hour access to cyberspace. The narrator, a teenager, oscillates between brilliant and ignorant, stimulated and bored, and compassionate and inhumane. He meets a girl with a disadvantaged past who has just gotten the implant, and his eyes are open to the pitfalls of a technocracy, as she slowly deteriorates. "Feed" is a modern sci-Fi classic in the vein of "Brave New World" and "1984."
In this unit we will look at the positives and negatives of technology, how it connects and disconnects us, and how it stratusfies society.
As educators we can't assume that the same old "classics" are enough for our students.
We must always strive to find new literature that addresses contemporary issues and tastes to supplement the "classics." "Feed" is an awesome combination of "Catcher in the Rye" style narrative mixed with modern issues, and a dark, edgy imagination of the future. My students are starving for books they can connect with, and they will eat this up.
So, come on, wire them into Feed!
