Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."
Our students are resilient.
They grow up in a city and neighborhood with an ill-reputed history of violence and crime. However, I'm more familiar with our students' goofy faces and big dreams than the violence. I'm more familiar with their families' hard work, warm welcomes, handshakes, and sharing of food than the crime.
The facts are: 87% of our graduates are the first in their family to go to college; 65% of our graduates are the first in their family to finish high school. Our students break barriers when they walk into our doors every single day by getting an education their parents weren't able to. Our students' "light bulb" moments mean so much more to us than you can imagine.
My Project
Our student population is 90% students who receive free and reduced lunch. They often come in hungry regardless and it is much harder for an adolescent to learn when they are hungry than when they are full.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs dictate that before students can learn/self-actualize, their physiological needs must be met, and this includes their fulfillment of hunger.
By giving to this project, you are feeding my students so they can feed their minds. While on a full stomach, I can get them to deeper levels of knowledge and problem solving, something required in our project-based learning curriculum.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
