My Students

Have you ever heard people talking about the newest book that everyone is reading? Did you go to the library/store to find the book only to discover it isn't available? Were you frustrated by your unfed curiosity and the lack of availability?

My students come from a rural community in Ohio that does not always have the resources to provide the most up to date books available for young readers!

The students are all eager learners but all too often my students lose motivation for learning and reading when their curiosity is squelched by the lack of interesting books. Many of the students do not have the means to visit the public libraries in the county or to purchase books for home, these resources could make the difference between students becoming readers or non-readers.

My Project

In the Accelerated Reading classroom, students are encouraged to read in hopes of developing a love of reading but that is much more difficult when they ask for the newest "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or "Hunger Games" book that is not available in the classroom or library. These books will be the saving grace to the A.R. classroom, as the students will be working towards reading more advanced literature instead of the tired, old books that are below their reading level.

By having the most up and coming authors and books available to the students, they are more eager and willing to read.

This eagerness to read will ultimately create lifelong readers, which will help them to be better students and eventually better citizens who will be the leaders of the community.
