Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a special education teacher in an urban setting, I feel compelled to provide my students with opportunities that will last a lifetime.
The majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch and come from socioeconomic backgrounds that are limited.
Therefore, I feel it is my duty to share with them a greater vision; my hope is to connect my students with the beauty of nature and to understand that the food we eat is directly provided to us by the natural world and the source of all we consume.
My Project
By creating a “farm” on our campus, we can integrate a wide variety of subjects into a hands-on, fun, and healthy experience. Science, math, health and art can all be infused into this project. Our students can feel the dirt, plant the seeds, and watch their project grow.
My ultimate goal is to have the students plant seeds that not only provide beauty but provide health benefits as well.
They are not accustomed to eating healthy foods, and now, with this project, they will. Prior to my special needs students getting on the bus, we will provide them with healthy meals from our garden made by our culinary students. How awesome would it be for them to grow, cultivate, and eat the finished product? I am asking for seeds, gardening gloves and smocks that would assist in the process. Please help me feed the children from farm to classroom.
