My Project
As this school year is underway, my students are working so hard to make up for the time they lost during COVID-19. I am seeing that a lot of my students are struggling with reading and reading comprehension.
Although, these strategies prepare students for the Reading Test that they take to show how well they should be able to read; for some students, it's just plain hard.
Kids are sponges at this age and while they can remember every villain Batman has ever encountered, remembering the sound that "au" make together sometimes just doesn't stick. This resource will allow me to give my babies the tools they need to unlock the code to understanding phonemic awareness and oral reading fluency skills with less mental effort than it takes when we teach traditional " Hooked on Phonics skills". The "secrets" are the buy-in for the students. They are the reason to sit up a little taller and listen. The "stories" are what they will remember when it's time to read or write words. The materials listed in this project will allow the students to remember the sounds that letters make when they are together!
What I love most about teaching 2nd Grade students is that there isn’t a rule book when it comes to teaching these students the skills they need to master reading strategies through real world experiences. The secrets are told organically, as they come up in class. I can use them in ELA or Reading just as easily as I can in Mathematics and Science. That means I'm teaching literacy all day long and I don't have to give up anything else to do so!
