Fashion Design for Equal Access to a College Education
My students need 30 scissors, 1 print-making classroom set (with ink, cutting tools, rollers, and printing blocks for 25 students), 5 additional ink rollers, and 100 additional printing blocks.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Key's classroom raised $646

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 10th grade students in my free, public charter high school enrolled for one primary reason: they want a better chance at being the first person in their family to attend and then graduate from college. I am an art teacher who is teaming up with my school's Learning Specialist and a non-profit called World Savvy to bring a dynamic art project into my classroom which will give my 125 students the chance to get their voice heard through fashion design.
Fashion and teens go together like peanut butter and jelly. But sometimes college and teens can be a bit more complicated; especially if those teens are to be the first college-bound members of their family. As my 10th graders get ready to move into their critical 11th grade year, I want to engage them in a discussion about college prep, equal access, scholarships, and the reality of applying to and succeeding in college.
So, we're going to do it through fashion. Students will analyze hard data and facts regarding their own socio-economic demographic to answer the question: "Do most kids like me go to and succeed in college?" They'll tackle the inequalities inherent in the answer to this question by writing other questions and statements that encourage their peers and families to get active and get serious about supporting each other. We'll print these questions/statements/designs on shirts, bandannas, whatever the students bring in. Where you come in is helping us to buy all the supplies we need to send the message...scissors, printing blocks, rollers, ink, cutting tools, etc. We need enough for all 125 of my students to create their own unique message and piece of fashion.
The best part is, the students already have a venue to make sure their message is seen and heard. Because of our partnership with World Savvy, students will wear their final creations and then perform at a world-class museum. In their performance, students will challenge and inspire their audience with the messages/facts/questions they developed around equal access to college. And then who knows...you just might see one of the t-shirts walking down the street one day and you'll know you had a part in helping them to get to college.
More than half of students from low‑income households
