Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My sixth grade students have a tendency to fight over the books I recommend. While their enthusiasm is fantastic, it is hard having limited books that appeal. I teach in a high-need area that has suffered this year in terms of supplies.

I am teaching more students than ever before, and yet I have fewer books. I want to make the nonfiction unit of study exciting and interesting to these young students. Many students are behind grade level in reading and I want this to be the year they catch up.

I need a class set of the book "Life in Prison" by Stanley "Tookie" Williams and a couple other good nonfiction books. "Life in Prison" is an easy to read and fascinating book that asks young adults to consider the choices they are making and encourages them to make positive ones that will not land them in jail. The two copies of the book I now have are dogeared and falling apart due to the book's popularity.

By supporting this project, you will ensure that my students find reading nonfiction engaging. The conversations that arise from reading this book could affect the course of their lives, and help them to make smart choices in life. It will also make them better readers! Please help.
