My Project
My students live in a food desert: they do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure a healthy diet. Health issues contributed to poor diet and lack of fresh food are rampant among the students and parents in our school family. If the students and families in our school community do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, then the best way to obtain it is to grow it!
Students will learn how to flood the food desert with fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruits picked with their own hands from their own gardens.
Gardening is a science, a skill, a relaxation technique, a self esteem builder, and most of all, a way to bring families together over a meal.
The fulfillment of this project will allow the students in my school to grow an herb and a vegetable of their choosing in the classroom. While we do not currently have access to a large area for an outside garden, students will learn that gardens grown inside provide food just as delicious. They will be able to watch the growth and learn the life cycle of plants and how to maintain them for years to come. Eventually each student will take home an herb and a vegetable to continue growing at home. The students, families, and staff of the school will also come together to begin cultivating the land to create a community garden.
