Fantasy Genre Book Clubs

My students need sets of 4 novels in reading levels M-Z for book clubs. Some titles in this request include the Warriors, Percy Jackson, Redwall, and Harry Potter series.

My Students

Readers learn and grow by reading and being able to discuss their books with others. The Fantasy Genre is a difficult one and it allows us, as readers, to follow characters through their complicated problems and journeys. This pushes readers in their thinking.

My students are really into music, sports, and real-world activities.

Getting them to sit down and read is easy, but they love reading for a real purpose. They thrive in situations where they are tasked with reading and participating in a discussion or debate with others (just like adults do). This type of communication not only helps them in the classroom, but helps them out on the playground and in other environments where they need to be able to communicate with others.

My Project

My students are avid readers but need to be challenged. By working in book clubs, they are set up for future real-world successes by setting structures in place to teach them how to read and discuss books with others. Getting the opportunity to read the same book as another person is something my students look forward to, but we don't always have the materials. This would support my readers from level M-Z in their learning. The titles were chosen based on high interest to the students. They include the first three books in several series including Harry Potter, Redwall, Chronicles of Narnia, Warriors, Secrets of Droon, and many other series. Student choice leads to more ownership in the learning and a better chance that skills will transfer. These books will also go to support the other fifth grade classrooms in my school and will last us for many years.

By being able to provide 4 copies of these books, levels M-Z, I will be able to support all readers in my classroom and in the other fifth grade classes at my school.

Through these Fantasy Genre Book Clubs we will learn communication skills, practice difficult comprehension skills, and prepare for the real-world. Being able to share a book with others makes reading so much more meaningful and I really hope to provide this opportunity with my students for many years to come.
