This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, eager young people who don't always clearly see the purpose of literacy in their lives. They suffer literacy drills and whole-class reads, but the real-world use of reading and writing is often lost on them. As a result, they go through school lacking a connection to the material, and their social-emotional health declines as they drift further away from the beautiful power of expressing themselves through words.

If the COVID pandemic taught us anything, it's how precious and essential it is to share space and discussion with other actual human beings.

My big focus this school year is to create opportunities that illuminate how literacy can be used in the real world. I want them to handle real books, have honest conversations with their families and classmates, and write things that serve real-world purposes. The fantasy book clubs I have planned for Spring 2023 combine those three missions.

These supplies will help me build a small group fantasy unit where groups are each different reading books, discussing and analyzing similar questions of theme, purpose, point of view, and conflict in imaginative storytelling. Students will finish the unit with a writing assignment of their choice, but whatever they write has to be published somewhere (for real) on the internet. That can mean a book review, a continuation of the story in the form of fan-fiction, or another application. This is a dream unit, and I need this grant to make it a reality. Please do help.
