Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am requesting materials to help support my students learn to read and write. My students currently practice with makeshift, damaged, or missing materials, which are not adequate to learning crucial phonics skills. These skills are necessary to becoming fluent readers and writers. My first grade students would benefit from personal white boards, dry erase markers and erasers to help facilitate phonics instruction which is necessary for progression through first grade ELA learning standards. Many of my students are also English Language Learners and they benefit tremendously from hands-on phonics practice. We currently use makeshift whiteboards which do not stand up to the sturdiness needed with first graders!
My students also need writing materials to gain more practice putting pencil to paper to develop crucial fine motor skills, letter formation, and handwriting.
I have requested pencils and cap erasers to last throughout the year.
Another important component to building reading fluency and comprehension is listening to audiobooks. My students have access to a variety of books on CD, unfortunately, my classroom does not have a CD player, or headphones so my students cannot listen to the CDs. My final request would be to provide this invaluable resource for my students, especially my English Language Learners.
