This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sixth Graders! My students are wonderful, witty and wise eleven and twelve year old learners. They attend a small, Title I elementary school in Nevada that was built in the 1950's. We serve breakfast and lunch to all students and many stay to eat dinner after school. Quite a few of my students take care of younger siblings and share in the chores at home while their parents are working. A high percentage of my students are bilingual, English Language Learners (ESL). They are learning required grade level material everyday, with the added roadblock of a language barrier.
My students are as capable as all other students in the nation and I just want to give them the same opportunities.
One of the truly nice things about my school is that it really is a neighborhood school. It is relatively small compared to other schools in the district, and most of the students that attend have many other family members here. All of our students live within walking distance and it is a real community. I believe that all of my students have the ability to do anything they set their minds to.
My Project
In my classroom, students work in different parts of the room when I am doing guided reading groups or other small group instruction. Do you remember being a sixth grader? Eleven year old children are constantly on the go. It's unrealistic for us to assume all kids can sit quietly in a chair for an extended length of time. I know that as an adult, I often feel the need to get up and move around as well.
Flexible seating in a classroom allows students choice, comfort, community, and collaboration.
Currently, my students only have the choice of sitting at a table or desk in a chair or sitting on the floor with a clipboard. Giving them a variety of options would be empowering for them. These flexible floor chairs will give them the opportunity to sit comfortably on the floor so that they can get their work done. They can also be put away when not in use. When the students saw these floor chairs, they all said that we needed to have them in our room. These chairs also match the STEM carpet we have in the back of the classroom.
