it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine being the low reader in the class having to read stories that are beyond your reading ability? Or can you imagine being a really good reader and being bored because the text is too easy for you?
I teach 22 of the most fantastic fabulous first graders on this planet.
They are mostly English Language Learners and want to do well with their reading. Our school has about 97% free and reduced breakfast/lunch. The majority of my students do not have books at home to read and if they do they are often in Spanish.
My Project
I would love for my students to have a set of nonfiction books that are leveled for each individual student. Quite often students do not get to read nonfiction and those are some of the most important books to read. These books will have a high interest level and each book will be at each individual students reading level.
It is all about "differentiated instruction".
There is no more of everyone gets to read the same text. Students read at many different levels and we as teachers need to make sure we have the resources available to help meet the needs of each student. These books will be used year after year, so the gift of reading will be spread to hundreds of fantastic children. Please help me give our students very text enriched books at each child's reading level. Reading is fundamental!
