Fantastic Fine Motor Skills

My Students

My classroom serves students in grades K-2 with a variety of special needs, including autism and down syndrome. My students are creative, artistic, and enthusiastic learners who teach me more and more about our world every day!

Many of my students struggle with fine motor skills and hand strength, and need a variety opportunities throughout the classroom to build fine motor skills.

My classroom provides individualized, one-on-one instruction through hands on learning experiences, sensory play, social skills, and direct instruction to meet the unique needs of the students we serve; fine motor skills is just one area we help address with the guidance of our amazing occupational therapist.

COVID-19 has created unique challenges for our classroom and learners. One of those challenges is having enough tangible hand strength and sensory materials to support fine motor skills within our classroom. to support learning and provide hands-on experiences while maintaining a safe environment. My students are excited learn and come to school ready each day. I want to make sure my students have what they need to learn and grow. This project helps do just that.

My Project

Each year we work hard towards building hand strength and fine motor skills. Many of my students are working on pre-writing strokes and are not yet able to write their name.

This project helps fund putty, droppers, pencil grips, sensory beads, pencil weights, and other hand strengthening materials for students to build hand strength and fine motor skills during play.

These materials are fun, engaging, and provide exciting opportunities for students to build skills. What looks like play will actually be students building skills!

Fine motor skills not only help improve written expression; it also allows for increased independent functioning. Students will gain the strength to button, snap, zip, pull and push! All skills they need every single day!
