My students attend a school in Northern Virginia. Each of my students comes from a unique background. Over one-third of our student population comes from low income homes and many are learning English as a second language. It is this diversity that enriches our classroom and makes learning together a truly wonderful experience.
As their teacher, my goal is to provide my students with the tools that they will need to be successful regardless of their socioeconomic background.
As they prepare to enter middle school, there are many ways I hope to prepare them for their next journey in life.
My Project
This book will be used in my fantasy unit that aligns with the Reading Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. This book will help students learn how navigate other worlds, interpret metaphors, life lessons and thematic patterns, investigate symbolism. It will also help them connect fantasy to other genres. With over half of my class comprised of English Language Learners, having hard copies of the book will help students track and attend to the text as well as annotate the text for a deeper analysis. It will also help cultivate a love of reading and encourage the reading of diverse genres!
