My Students

Being a support mathematics teacher allows me the opportunity to utilize my background in mathematics as well as special education. I am able to teach students from grades 3-6 who are struggling the most with learning grade level mathematics. I typically work with about 8 students at a time in a small group setting that focuses on what they specifically need to help them reach the Common Core Standards.

Many of my students are coming from low-income households or are English language learner students.

Coming from a low-income household should not be an excuse for these students to not be successful in school and they deserve all the wonderful tools to help them be successful in math.

My Project

The Common Core Math Standards emphasize they importance of fluency in mathematics. Each grade level is challenged to meet a particular fluency standard such as multiplication fact mastery.

The students I work with struggle with mathematics and fluency, in particular, is a challenge for them.

Building fluency skills will help my students see greater success in more complex math problems. They won’t have to struggle with basic computation and, in turn, be able to focus more on complex word problems that todays mathematicians are challenged to complete.

The materials I am requesting will support daily math practice and the mastery of fluency skills. I have witnessed how students can gain confidence in math just by mastering fluency skills and I am hoping that these resources will help provide the confidence boost that my students need.
