This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Francis Scott Key school was built in 1889, 133 years ago. My school is the oldest school building in the School District of Philadelphia. Our school building maintains the heat during the hotter months. When the sun hits the building, it’s hotter in the building than it is outside. Currently, 40% of school buildings in the School District of Philadelphia have central air conditioning. In schools without central air, some but not all classrooms have window or room units. Francis Scott Key school is part of the 60% of schools that lack air conditioning. It is one of the 111 schools that need to close during extreme heat.

The 3 fans will keep students cool and provide a comfortable environment where they can stay focused and learn.

They will help students feel less hot in the beginning and end of the school year when the climate in Philly gets uncomfortably hot. I have one Window AC in my classroom which only blows cold air in one direction. The students near the AC will feel either cool or cold, but the students not around the AC will feel hot. I will place each fan around the room so it can circulate the cool air from the window ac. This will help students feel cooler and comfortable to focus on learning instead of the heat.

Comfortable environment is crucial to learning. When the weather is hot, it is a struggle to stay cool without fans. Please help keep my students cool and ready to learn during the hot months in the oldest building of the Philadelphia School district!
