This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in mathematics. Many of my students deal with challenges of being part of a low income-household, and are unable to access tools that they need to help them succeed. Another challenge that they face is a language barrier: most of them come from non-English speaking households.

Even with these challenges, my students are enthusiastic, determined, and excited to learn!

They come into my classroom every day, prepared, and ready to get to work. They are inquisitive and want to know the whys behind every calculation and the purposes of them. They love to be able to apply concepts were learning to real-world scenarios. They are excited when something finally clicks!

My ELL students are working towards developing fluency within the English language and grow each and every day learning new math vocabulary words. They even love being able to decipher new words in our math storybooks and creating their own math problems!

They are fearless when it comes to technology and as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.

My Project

My students and I want to engage with math in a more fun and engaging way. We would like to be able to do projects and create posters that show how math can be used in the real world.

My students LOVE to be creative and use their artistic abilities to demonstrate their abilities in math.

Recently we were able to create a four-quadrant poster that showcased a problem, its solution, graph and explained how to reach the solution. Earlier in the year we create board games about using the order of operations with positive and negative numbers, and my students ADORED this project.

We would love to be able to do more projects like this, this far in the year we need a refresher of materials. Any help is greatly appreciated.
