Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban community. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingualism is embraced and supported.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds. Many of our households have full time working parents limiting parent engagement in daily school-wide volunteer opportunities. One of the goals of this project is to foster a growth in academic achievement through family engagement.

My Project

My students are conducting family interviews to explore our guiding social studies question of how different groups of people contribute to the US and the world. With the additional materials listed my students will be able to continue and complete interviews with a family member. Specifically, they will be displaying their interviews through still and live images. Students began conducting their interviews and with the materials donated from the first project will begin publishing their interviews through a visual format. They will utilize the Insta cameras to capture authentic images of their interviewees. With our first Chromebook we will extend our project to include live images of the interviews themselves. The two additional Chromebooks will help facilitate this portion since two classes will be participating in this project. Our final project will be displayed in a gallery format of immigrant stories through portraits and clips of the interviews themselves.

With this project students will be able to have open dialogues with their families about the many contributions that many immigrant families give to this diverse country.

They will also have the opportunity to showcase their work to their peers, school and community at our end of the year celebration of learning.

This project will not only cover our social studies standards for the people of this country but it will also support learning activities that engage families and support student growth. This project will be completed over time and it will sustain an open and ongoing collaboration between students and their families. It will give parents and families an opportunity to participate in their child's education in a creative way. This project will also foster academic growth through the us use of academic language, grade level standards and the use of 21st century skills.
