My students need visual dictionaries to expand their English vocabulary, their background knowledge, and to enrich their native language skills with their families.

My Students

The first day of school is an exciting time: fresh pencils and crayons, empty journals and new faces. But what if you showed up to school, eager to learn, to read, to write, and make new friends but you couldn't understand a word anyone around you was saying?

Our school is home to one of the most diverse populations in the state with nearly 50 different languages.

Most of our families live in high poverty making basic home-learning supplies like books and dictionaries a luxury. Our kindergarten English language learners make amazing gains learning the mechanics of the language, but often struggle with the content.

My Project

These visual dictionaries will become the first of many future resources available to our families, as part of our kindergarten family-outreach effort. The goal is to have our ESL students interact with their families and these books to build their background knowledge and enhance their language skills. Pictures that range from everyday objects to more specific academic-language images will provide a stepping stone for academically-related conversations to occur between a parent and their child.

We all know the benefits that reading and engaging in rich academic conversation at home can have on children.

Language learners, not only have to learn the content, but the language as well. Something as simple as a visual dictionary with both social and academic words, can help parents provide a native-language connection to the English-language content their multi-lingual children will encounter, ensuring the success of our ELL students.
