My students need books to read with their families in order to help them grow as readers. Our families want to help their children learn but do not always know how to do so.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at our school are energetic, enthusiastic learners, from the youngest in Head Start to our sixth graders. They have families who do all they can to support them and ensure they do their best in school. Both children and families: parents, siblings, and often extended family members, are all working together to help students succeed.

The majority of our students are first and second generation immigrants and are learning English, both our students and their families.

They are not only learning the standard content and curriculum in school but are also learning a new culture and language.

My Project

These books are designed for parents or other adults to read with their children. Every two page spread is split; the left page is for the adult to read, with more complex language and vocabulary. The right hand page is for the child the read, with the support of the adult.

We will be holding family events, during the school day and in the evening, to work with families on how to use these books and will then have the books available for them to check out to read at home.

We intend to continue to build a library of these types of books to allow families to support their students as readers throughout their years at our school.
