Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the only school counselor for over 600 amazing students. Ninety percent of our students are Latino, and 76% are from low-income families. About 11% of our students are considered special needs. Our students are bright and creative and come from hard-working, loving families that want to see their children succeed.

Due to the pandemic, some of our students have missed over a year and a half of in person instruction.

My Project

Every child, unfortunately, is bound to experience a difficult family event as they grow up. It might be their parents divorcing or separating, a parent's new marriage, new siblings, or a loss in their life. Whatever the unexpected and challenging circumstance may be, it can affect student's behavior and their ability to perform in school.

When these challenging situations arise, students can find comfort in these books so they feel less alone and more at ease with their feelings of anger, frustration, or sadness.

During these unexpected events in a child's life, they may experience a wide range of emotions that they never had to deal with before. These books will give children the words they need allowing important conversations to be initiated about what they are experiencing.

Having access to quality books that reflect common family issues can provide students with the words that give names to their feelings and help them find a place of acceptance and understanding.
