Family Make and Take Activities!

My students would benefit from materials to help them with word study activities such as foam letters, popsicle sticks, plastic cups, sharpie markers, index cards, foam cards, ziploc bags for storage, magnetic strips and cardstock to create engaging word work activities to take home and learning centers for the classroom.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wagner's classroom raised $407

Hello! I teach the 2nd grade at an urban Illinois school. I have will have about 30 students in my class. The majority of my students receive special education services or as identified as English Language Learners. So many of my students speak Spanish, Polish or Urdu at home. Many of my students and their families are also still adjusting to the expectations and norms of being a student in an American school system. This makes it even more important for the families of my students to spend time in our classroom participating with their students in curriculum-based activities. I am writing this proposal to ask for materials so that I can create a Make It and Take It! program in which parents can come into our classroom, work with their students on a project and then take it home with them! In our classroom we often play word games to help the students with letter recognition, sounds, patterns within words and spelling. I have asked for materials and supplies that will allow the students to make games for the classroom and for home - so that they can receive extra practice with word work at home. Many students in 2nd grade struggle with making and spelling compound words or contractions. I have asked for foam boards to that the students can create two-piece puzzles to help them build these skills. First, they can cut the small foam squares into two pieces and then on one piece they would write "I will" on the second piece of the puzzle they would write "I'll." This creates a contraction puzzle that they must match the pieces to! I would like the students and families to come into the classroom to help the students create their Word Journals. In my class, my students have a personal word journal that is full of words that each individual student needs help spelling or understanding the meaning of. Each student's journal is arranged in alphabetical order, but the words written in each journal depend upon the student's reading fluency and comprehension. We also do not keep our journals in a typical spiral journal - but on index cards that are kept together with a key ring. This makes it easy for the students to add words to their journal or take out words that they have memorized. Another game I would like the students to create is a spelling game on which the students write their spelling words on popsicle sticks and then put all of the sticks into a cup. A student draws out a stick and reads the word written on the stick and the other student must spell the word correctly to earn the stick. This is a great game the students can play both in class and at home to reinforce spelling and vocabulary. Finally, I have asked for markers, foam letters and ziploc bags that can be used for labeling and keeping all of the games organized! I am really excited about the opportunities, communication and engagement these materials will provide for my students and their families! Thank you very much for taking the time to read my proposal.
