My students arrive to our school excited and eager to learn. They are curious about their world and if granted the opportunity to interact with people from their community, I know their desire to learn will be amplified!
Educating a child is a partnership between parents, teachers, and schools.
As a teacher, it is my passion to do whatever I can to give all of my students the opportunity to learn. By involving their families in their education, my students will have a greater chance at exceeding their academic goals. Through this project, students will work alongside their families to create stories, read, and record their academic growth.
My Project
My first graders are at the beginning stage of their educational career and are building the foundation for their future. The early years are crucial for providing reading, writing, and higher order thinking skills lessons. As students continue through school, everything they learn depends on a strong foundation. Students who fall behind early on are less likely to catch up, instead the gap increases. As their teacher it is important for me to prevent the gap and provide them with the correct tools. My role is important, but I am not the only source of their learning. I want them to know that their families have a lot to teach them, so I want to begin a lunch and learn program for my students and families.
Through this program, an important educational partnership will be constructed.
Family members will be invited to come to school to work alongside their students. What I envision is having the children teach their parents what they are learning through numerous reading and writing activities. Through the activities, the parents will explore the curriculum with the students and together they will create projects using the tablets. They can read electronic books, research a favorite topic, then create a presentation or video to share with the class. Together, the families and students can record the progress of our class edible garden through pictures and write posts to add to our class website. Students will work alongside their families and both parties will learn. Students will know that educational success is important to their family. Families will be engaged in the curriculum, the teaching techniques, and their child's progress. Not all families will be able to attend, but using the tablets, we will be able to host virtual lunch and learn sessions increasing family involvement.
