Family Fun Time: Settlers of Catan

My students need 3 Catan board games to improve critical thinking skills, develop an powerful understanding of probability, and advance a positive classroom climate.

My Students

Do you remember playing board games? Although my students enjoy playing games on their tablets and phones, they have recently shown an increased interest in playing board games. My students enjoy playing checkers, but they need some new games to increase their mathematical reasoning skills.

My students come from a rural school in an area that was hit hard by the decline of the textile industry.

Many homes have parents who work at minimum wage jobs. About 85% of my students receive free or reduced price school lunches. Despite economic hardships, my students have incredible potential in mathematics. My students work hard in class, but many of their parents have stated an inability to help with school work due to working late hours or struggling with school themselves. Having taught for 13 years, I have collected a supply of standard board games like Monopoly and checkers. My students absolutely love playing these games. They enjoy the "Family Fun Time" atmosphere, and I have really gotten to know some neat kids by playing the games with the students. The students have started to make some connections between the board games and the math we do in class. It is so much fun seeing the "light bulb" moments when the kids do well in class because of our time playing games.

My Project

The students will use the board games at the beginning of our unit on probability and statistics. The game, Settlers of Catan, is built upon the concept of probability - specifically experimental and theoretical probability. The students get great experiences with experimental probability and then develop their understanding of theoretical probability as they play the game over and over. The students will make connections between game play and probability. The game play allows me to refer back to the game during class discussions. The students will also use ratios and bartering throughout the game. Students will practice trading resources and making multi-step plans as part of winning the game. There are multiple ways to win the game, and students have to select strategies based on the current situation. Students also make allies and adapt to changing conditions. The Cities and Knights game allows me to challenge my students with a whole new level of game play.

Each child will get one on one attention as I personally play games with the students. Students who struggle to participate in class open up during these unstructured times, and they often begin to work harder in class. Further, students will be able to practice math in a problem solving context. The game has multiple variations, and it presents unique challenges every time we play. The students love playing against their classmates.
