This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of bright first graders who are ready and eager to learn. The majority are English language learners whose families come from Mexico and Central America, so they have a steep learning curve as they rapidly learn English vocabulary as well as foundational reading and writing skills in their first few years of school.

Additionally, many students come from high-poverty backgrounds with limited access to academic experiences, conversations, and materials at home.

I want to do everything within my power to provide high-quality resources for them in school that will widen their experience and enjoyment and help them to grow in leaps and bounds in their academic achievement!

My Project

This past year was my first year teaching first grade. All year long, I have been searching for new ways to increase family engagement and ensure that my students are learning at home as well as in school. Many of my students' families are eager to help their children succeed, but they often lack the resources and English language skills to help.

I want to bring together a library cart of take-home resources to help engage families in fun learning activities at home.

I would love to introduce the resource library to families at the open house in September to use all year long.

Many times my students struggle to complete their math homework at home because they lack the manipulatives that we use every day in school. Including interactive whiteboards in their homework folders and other manipulatives in our check-out resource library will help them confidently complete their homework.

I was so excited when I saw another teacher's engaging project idea to pair books and movies! My students love reading and talking about books and always want to take them home. I want to put together Spanish and English copies of each text to send home for parents and students to read together. Once they finish and turn in a reading response activity, they can take home a movie and popcorn to enjoy with their families!
