This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For most of my kindergarteners, September will be the first time they step foot into a classroom. They are curious, nervous and eager to learn, but they begin at a disadvantage! "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." -Dr. Seuss (The Lorax)
My students live in an extremely high poverty, high crime neighborhood in inner-city Philadelphia.
Our school is a Title 1 school and 100% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch. It is very difficult for their families to contribute much to their education and most of the children come to school with very little. Unfortunately, the school district only provides a very small allotment to teachers and I am not able to provide my students with all the resources that are needed.
My Project
Too many of my students will begin the school year below grade level because of their lack of experiences. I would hate for them to be discouraged due to circumstances out of their control! I want to immerse them in literature right from the beginning and hopefully help them develop a love for reading. They will use these fiction and nonfiction books on a daily basis! They will use them individually, with a partner and in teacher led small groups to identify sight words and practice other necessary reading skills. We also need two book display stands for our new books.
This project will provide my students with the literacy experiences I would not be able to supply them with on my own.
I will be able to expose them to grade level fiction and nonfiction literature that will help to increase their comprehension and reading levels and develop a life long love of reading!
