My Students

Like my students, I used to hate reading, and then, in 7th Grade, I read Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. The book, with humor, action, and realistic emotional drama began my lifelong love of reading. I'm hoping this book will have the same effect on my students.

In Connecticut, my students represent the largest achievement gap in the country.

Living in a community ravaged by poverty, gangs, substance abuse, and instability, many have had to worry too often for children their age about what tomorrow will bring. This, along with other factors, contribute to many of my students being as many as four years behind in reading. I teach at an alternative school, so the students at my school have all had especially difficult experiences in traditional schools. Most of them have been retained at least once, many have been retained two or three times. They have lost most if not all investment they ever had in education. It is my daily struggle to help them find it again.

My Project

All habitual readers have one thing in common. The first books they read interested and excited them. Could you imagine living the first fifteen or sixteen years of your life never having come in contact with a book that interested or excited you? That is a reality for my students, and if that doesn't change they will continue down the path of illiteracy. I have found a book that my students love to read. Fallen Angels, a realistic account of one young man's struggles as a soldier during the Vietnam War, inspired me when I was my students' age, and it can inspire them as well. Unfortunately, our school district doesn't have enough room in the budget for copy paper let alone books. Two years ago, I taught the book by going to different local libraries and checking out all of their copies. Reading the novel in class, students were begging me to take the book home. I couldn't let them take it home, but I would like to be able to do that when I teach the book this time.

Reading growth cannot occur if there is no independent reading.

The forty minutes I see my students every day is not enough time to make the significant changes they need. I have finally found a book that they will be motivated to read outside of school. Please help me invest my students in the freedom and power that comes with the love of reading.
